The Physician Assistant - Neurosurgery
plays a vital role in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of neurosurgical
patients, working closely with the supervising physician. The PA is responsible
for obtaining patient medical histories, conducting initial and periodic
physical examinations, and ordering necessary lab tests and diagnostic
procedures for comprehensive patient evaluation. They assess patient
conditions, suggest differential diagnoses, and assist in formulating and
implementing treatment plans.
The PA prescribes medications, orders
fluids and diets (with physician countersignature), and ensures accurate
documentation in patient medical records. Responsibilities also include
performing laboratory and minor surgical procedures, such as drawing blood,
urinalysis, starting IV solutions, suturing lacerations, performing skin
biopsies, and managing superficial abscesses. The PA assists in surgical
emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and trauma care, and may
initiate emergency management in the physician's absence.
Additionally, the PA coordinates
consultations, monitors patient scheduling for specialized tests, and provides

options. They conduct daily rounds to track patient progress, update charts,
and notify physicians of any condition changes.
